Biking baskets are a great option for carrying a variety of different loads that otherwise would be difficult for a cyclist to bring along.
Baskets can be mounted to the front or back of a bike.
Front baskets often attach to the handlebars and hang above the front tire (or fender if there is one) while rear baskets usually attach to the bike frame via mounting holes in the frame itself. These baskets sit above the rear tire (or fender).
The best uses for a bike basket
For the average person, a bike basket is a great way to avoid having to wear a backpack, while still being able to cart around simple essentials. For example, going for a day out? A basket will easily hold your coat, a packed lunch, a picnic blanket or drinks.
Delivery riders (usually in cities) use baskets to help hold letters, postcards and small packages while out on their delivery route.
Students use baskets to carry binders and textbooks all around campus, and to and from their residence.
Pet enthusiasts can use baskets (often specially designed) to carry around their furry friend. Most often you will see small dogs in these baskets.
Cyclists who choose to go on a long ride can benefit from a basket by storing their spare tubes and tools in case they suffer a mechanical.
Both adults and children make use of baskets. Children usually use baskets for play but often use them to hold water when on rides with their guardians. Giving a child a bike basket is a great way for them to learn to start carrying their own items on bike rides.
Which material should you go with?
The build of a bike basket determines how it will look, and how it will hold up to the elements. Different people prefer different materials, so choose what suits you.
Metal. Metal baskets tend to be the strongest and best wearing basket. They usually feature lightweight crossing metal bars that make up the carrying compartment. Sometimes a wire mesh is also used. Although they hold up to the elements better than other types of baskets, eventually they will rust if not taken care of (the same as with your bike). Most metal baskets are not great for minuscule items as they tend to fall through the cracks. Plate style metal baskets will hold these items the best. You can also get a liner to help with this issue.
Fabric. Fabric baskets are usually made of canvas. They can hold a wide variety of items without issue including small items that may not be contained by some metal baskets. Many fabric baskets have a closing top, either by buttons or a zip. Sometimes a light metal frame is built into the fabric to help the basket keep its shape while other times the basket has no frame which makes it easy to store. A benefit to the fabric style basket is that they are often coated making them water resistant or water proof.
Wicker. Wicker bike baskets are what most people think of when you say bike basket. They are the traditional style of basket and work to carry pretty much anything you need. Wicker baskets are often coated in a clear lacquered finish to protect it against the elements. They sometimes come with a wicker lid as well.
Natural. Natural material baskets are a growing trend. They are usually made out of some type of wood which creates a sturdy base. A variety of other natural materials are used for styling and can be found dyed in huge array of colors.
Plastic. Plastic baskets are usually the cheapest option. They are light, easy to clean, and can withstand almost any weather. The downside is that they are not usually as durable as the other options and tend to bend under heavy loads.
Should you choose a front or back seat basket?
Bike baskets can be found on the front and back of bikes. Usually front baskets are attached to the handlebars in some way, while the back baskets are attached to the seat or frame behind the seat.
Front bike baskets are attached to the bike via the handlebars. They can use adjustable straps or metal stabilizers to help keep from moving around. Front baskets provide easy access to items while at a halt, or on the move. Unfortunately, front baskets are not designed for large heavy loads and can unbalance the bike if are too heavy. If you aim to get a basket to carry your pet, then a front basket is best because you can keep an eye on it as you ride.
Rear bike baskets are the best option for carrying larger or heavy loads. They are usually mounted to a bike rack but alternatively to the seat or seat post with stabilizers straight from the frame or axles. The lower the load is, the lower the center of gravity will be, creating a stable ride. Rear baskets often feature quick release options in order to take the basket off of the supporting structure quickly and easily. Rear baskets are also beneficial as they do not hinder vision when riding.
